The unicorn lifted its head to look at the tree.  It was odd; somehow the leaves just didn’t seem to fit.  It was too early in the season for the flowers to bloom.  Something was different about this year than any other year.  It had been a long hot summer and was turning to fall late this year.  The unicorn had known to love and respect this tree for every year it went to the tree to renew its magical power.  But this year, the power seemed to be depleted.  How could this be?  There weren’t any other trees like this one.  Was he doomed to now walk the earth as a mere horse for the rest of his now short existance.  The life he had lived as a unicorn was unlike any other but, upon relfection, he decided that maybe pulling a cart wasn’t such a bad idea after all.  Besides, there weren’t any female unicorns to speak of.  With such a glaring omission, who even needed a horn.  Skipping happily, he hurried down the road to find the nearest farmer who needed a draft horse.
