Not really stressing but it is alot of reading of course it helps just kinda sucks to sit down and read it.
The reading actually calmed me down a bit, just because it gave me a better idea of what is expected from our topics and sources. Vagueness leaves room for error because regardless of whether or not it is stated, there are always precise requirements on topics, papers, and sources.
My idea generation was not so much topics but things for example one was “octopus” and I was wondering how I was going to make an argument about that or what there even was to argue about them. The reading showed me that a thing is ok to start with but that the question you ask about it is what will make it a viable topic.
The reading helped to calm me down, because it describes so well what the report is about, but that ended when i started to think about my topic.
Not quite to the stressing part. Ya just gotta chill.
I actually learned a lot and the concept of searching for a keywords and narrowing the subject became a whole lot clearer to me. Since the part I dread the most is finding the “perfect source” that answers all my questions, this reading assignment helped me to understand that a researcher will not find crystal clear answers, but he will find information that will help him formulate his own answer.
I felt the same way. The more I read the more I became excited to write and research.
I don’t know how to use a computer!!!

You’re going to have fun in this class, then.
Seriously, there are some little seminars on this given through the University.
I am kind of stressing about that as well. The reading did help quite a bit for me. Sounds almost exactly like the assignments in 1010 just more indepth. (aka a lot more work
But hopefully it will all come together.
A lot of the information presented was a review for me. However, there were a lot of ideas that I have never really thought about before that I now realize as useful. I would consider myself previously as a “data dump” writer. I liked the part in chapter 21 that talks about asking yourself about the function that your source plays in your arguement. I never have thought of looking at it from that “angle of vision.”
I found the information to be a great help. Still not sure what I’m writing about though
Garrett, are you paying everyone in the class to put positive things on this blog? lol
Garrett replied on September 3rd, 2009:
Sure seems like it
They aren’t sure if I’ll give credit for only positive comments.
The reading was interesting. The more I learn about writing the more interested in writing I become. I never really understood how much goes into becoming a good writer.
Yep. Interesting reading! Definately my most favorite book out of all of my other classes. I enjoyed reading about different audiences and how to pitch an argument to different kinds of audiences.
I found the reading to be informative, if a bit dry. I guess you can expect that from a textbook, though. I enjoyed all of the different strategies on how to take notes and conduct research. Normally I don’t take notes when I read and research, which is probably why many of my papers have resulted in the “data dump” or “boxcar” style. Does anyone have any other useful tips for taking notes for a research paper?
It’s just comforting for me that it doesn’t feel like we are being tossed at sea without any tools when it comes to writing. We have so many tools, guidelines, and resources to help us right a successful paper. I am to excited to write and to implement the things we are being taught.
It’s been 8 years since I’ve had the pleasure of writing a full-on research paper and until i read the assigned sections I was thinking the modern interweb would make the research a breeze. This reading helped me see that that is not necessarily going to be the case. I’m looking forward to the library time to get clear idea on how to attack the research in a more techno-savvy manner.
The reading has helped alleviate some of my worries as well. It helped to review evaluating sources and angle of vision etc., but the first part stood out the most as it was about the importance of having a research question. I don’t have one yet.
In regards to the Degree of Advocacy on pg. 600 in the text. Could you reference a completely bias source and then discredit them to strengthen your argument?
Garrett replied on September 4th, 2009:
That would only work if your audience did not know the source. If they did, it would weaken your argument.
Its been years since I have written a research paper. All of your ideas and techniques for finding the perfect source and collecting knowledgeable information has really opened a new door for me, and refreshed my memory on how to write a thurough research paper.
Yep, pretty sure I can feel the stress, and the sleepless nights coming on already..
JohnWill replied on September 4th, 2009:
yeah, I already pulled an all-nighter and I just about died.
My question is where to find “credible” and “reliable” sources as it explains it in the book? These days it is hard to know who or what kind or source is credible.
Garrett replied on September 4th, 2009:
Hope this was answered for you in class (the library) on Thursday.
You would think that after at least four years of high school where we should be writing papers people would be able to tell what a valid source is from the internet. Most of us in class have had at least one semester of English in college as well if not more yet they are still hammering the same information down our throats of valid sources. Perhaps if it was done correctly the first time they wouldn’t have to be continuing to teach us this stuff and work on something new.
But I guess the “System” isn’t all to blame because it is the students that are spending more and more time with technological “toys” whether it by software type things like Facebook, Twitter, etc or Video gaming systems to actually pretend to comprehend new things that don’t give off a low glow that destroys their retinas.
All in all the reading did have some valid points in it that were new but I would say 95% of it was taught last semester in 1010.
Ok I am done with my comment now, hope you didn’t waste to much of your time reading it and didn’t take offense at any of it. If you did then stop and think, “Hey, what he said must be true.”
I’m not gonna lie, I think that the allyn bacon book is boring, it has a lot of information to try to take in all at once. At least for me. The DK handbook however, is really helping. It is short and to the point, and has really helped me find my topic for my paper. This weeks reading has helped me to try to narrow my topic and help start my paper. I think it has probably helped me in my writing more than any other book and i just started using it.
I like the questions it gave you to ask yourself about a website’s credibility. With all the good information the internet has to offer there is also a lot of inaccurate information. With the internet being my main source for research I like to make sure what I’m using is legitimate.
Second attempt at writing in this blog. Didn’t know you had to be logged in
Any way I found the reading enlightening and now that I know that research papers can be fun to write by posing an interesting problematic question I am not dreading it as much.

This is what happens when one doesn’t pay attention in class or just misses it all together.
Reading about Writing how or steps in research paper is like listinning to same music all the time, i did the reading, it sound pretty much like what i have being hearing right from my previous english classes 950 ,
