For class, we’ll be talking about portfolios and public speaking and oral presentations.
Make sure to bring your completed Grammar Quiz with you to class.
You also need to do the reading and respond to this post with your links for video presentations.
The video can be about presentations, someone giving a presentation, or generally about rhetoric or something we learned in class this semester. Or, even something related to your research topic.
The videos can come from any source, but here are a few good sites for searching:

http://www.hulu.com
http://www.jibjab.com
http://www.ted.com
The first link is a video from The Colbert Report. It is the video that inspired all of my research since then.

The second video is a video I found when I first started my research. I included it because it has some good info about my topic. FYI the beach that Captain Moore mentions–Kailua Beach– is a half mile from where I use to live in Hawaii. I know that spot intimately!

This last link isn’t for a video, but it is a pop cultural reference to the topic.

Enjoy!

This is Dr. Stephen Shore’s Future of Autism presentation. He himself is autistic and addresses not only questions that I have been researching, but questions that some of you asked me in class when you learned what my topic was.
John Lorz replied on April 3rd, 2010:
It is really interesting to me how wide the characteristics of autism are and how different it can manifest itself. I can see how their would be a push to see people with autism as having certain skills rather than disabilities. However, the problem with this is that if conditions are caused by some other human action (medication, pollution, etc.) then shouldn’t we find out what it’s source is and stop what is causing these conditions to exist.
I’m not saying that the people don’t have value, just that that atypical mental development should be seen as a concern and as far as prevention goes it should be handled like a disease that requires action to treat the growing number of cases. I just think that universally viewing it as a different “personality” and letting that affect our efforts of prevention is ultimately damning to our species as a whole.
samfoster replied on April 7th, 2010:
Wow. I disagree with you completely. To see someone high functioning like Dr. Shore or Temple Grandin or some of the other individuals with videos on YouTube just confirms my idea that there’s a fine line between disfunction and differences. Autism, in particular, has no physical markers of disease–a brain scan or blood test will not identify or confirm a diagnosis. Without that type of evidence, who’s to say that it’s not just a personality difference? Someone who can thrive on their own without medical or social intervention is not, in my eyes, ill.

I have a Cousin that has Autism and it was great to hear what is being done and also what the future holds for ideas and exceptance of Autism. This was a great clip.

Nathan,
I really enjoyed listening to that workshop on addiction. I found the information that was presented to be very interesting. I am also writing my paper on addiction: whether it is a disease or personal choice. Good luck with your paper and I would very much like to read your final draft if possible. Send it to my email if you wouldn’t mind me reading it… kn0wledge_@msn.com (that is a zero in the word knowledge by the way).
RichardLoveless replied on April 7th, 2010:
nice gentic control of addiction. I bet someone got thier PHD in that and might (Maybe) make a lot of money off it.
John Lorz replied on April 10th, 2010:
That Mouse Party game thing is hilarious! I think thats good though to show kids an easy to understand way of seeing how drugs work on people.
This is a short video on what it is like for a teenager living with Asperger syndrome.

This video link is about gang violence.
austintechhead replied on April 25th, 2010:
I lived in New Zealand for a couple of years and they have some pretty mean gangs. The trouble is the island is so small that there’s no real place to hide if someone wants out of that life, not to mention that the population of 4 million are all Whanau in some way or another…
It’s a different gang life there, but it’s driven by the same factors.

really it is just clips from it.
John Lorz replied on April 10th, 2010:
Human sexuality is such an interesting topic because it is the only natural bodily function that is completely necessary and at the same time so condemned. I loved the arguments for pornography as a relationship aid.
this video is about ethos pagos and logos
austintechhead replied on April 25th, 2010:
She could have been more engaging while speaking about how to use rhetoric…
This is only the trailer to a DVD on addiction: whether it is a disease or personal choice (which is my topic for my final paper). The first 3/4 of the clip are informative but I have listened to the audio version of this and it is amazing. Anyway enjoy!
