For class, we are getting caught up on the Graphics lesson, so that means you need to read:

AB 252-260
DK 226-231

You should also print out and have ready for review your attempt at the opening of your classical argument paper (just the first page to two pages).

You also need to bring (electronic or printout) all of the sources you have so far. If those sources have some form of graphic, you don’t have to bring anything else. If they don’t, you need to bring a couple examples of graphics.

Thesis statements are sorely misunderstood by beginning writers, often exacerbated by well-meaning but inept high school English teachers.

Remember, to be truly useful, a thesis must be based on a research question that is problematic and specific. Yes/No questions are much less interesting and result in much more boring papers than those that are based on open-ended questions that involve why, how, what effect, and so forth type questions.

There is no real “magic formula” for generating a winning thesis, contrary to what the above site implies.

Refer to the Resources section and your class section for handouts and information I’ve given in class, if you want more information about why this site is so bad.

You need to bring a completed printout of the 5 questions available in the PDF for the Intermediate Research lessons. To get the PDF, do the following:

  • Go to the library home page.

  • Click on the Course Materials tab near the top of the page.

  • Click the Intermediate Research link under Library Tutorials.

  • Read the page and start the assignment. You’ll want to answer the questions throughout the tutorial on scratch paper, then print out the PDF at the end of the exercise and fill it in with your answers.

    I’ve found a few interesting sources that talk about research. As usual, I’ve also linked to these on the Resources page.

    Here they are, in no particular order:

  • Pew Study on Information-Finding Behavior – This blog talks about an interesting study on how and where people get information. You may be surprised by the results!

  • Beyond Wikipedia: 20 References You Can’t Do Without – Want to start doing research? Start it online with these great resources. After all, Wikipedia only takes you so far, and with a certain stance.

  • Research Beyond Google: 119 Authoritative, Invisible, and Comprehensive Resources – Excellent article on how to really use the internet to do research, and how to avoid lots of the junk.

    • Of the 20 references beyond Wikipedia, here are some that I really liked:

  • Citizendium -  “The Citizendium (sit-ih-ZEN-dee-um), a “citizens’ compendium of everything,” is an open wiki project aimed at creating an enormous, free, and reliable encyclopedia. The project, started by a founder of Wikipedia, aims to improve on the Wikipedia model by adding “gentle expert oversight” and requiring contributors to use their real names. We have over 4500 articles and hundreds of contributors.”

  • Answers – “Answers.com offers free access to millions of topics from the world’s leading publishers.”

  • Bartleby – “Publishes the classics of literature, nonfiction, and reference free of charge for the home, classroom, and desktop of each and every Internet participant.”

  • Encyclopedia Britannica – The old classic.

  • Oxford English Dictionary – Can tell you the origins of every word in the English language. Quite fascinating, really.

  • Scholarpedia – “The free peer reviewed encyclopedia written by scholars from all around the world.”

  • Wikiseek – Use it to really search Wikipedia. “Wikiseek utilizes a category refinement technology, providing suggested search refinements based on user tagging and categorization within Wikipedia, making results more relevant than conventional search engines.”

  • WikiMindMap – “WikiMindMap is a tool to browse easily and efficiently in Wiki content, inspired by the mindmap technique. Wiki pages in large public wiki’s, such as wikipedia, have become rich and complex documents. Thus, it is not allways straight forward to find the information you are really looking for. This tool aims to support users to get a good structured and easy understandable overview of the topic you are looking for.”

    I’ve mentioned these tools in class, but I am finally putting links on here for everyone to use. You can also find these on the Resources page.

    The first is Zotero, a Firefox extension for organizing, tracking, and annotating source.

    Next is NoodleTools,  a site with a couple tools for APA style, and a nice guide to doing research and where to start out.

    Finally, our very own UVSC Library has a few nice resources to help you along your research path, including a couple good tutorials, live librarian help, and subject-related guidance.

    Well, looks like our schedule has to change again folks! There was no class tonight because of a power outage.

    I’ll just have everyone turn in their papers on Wednesday in class.

    However, I am still expecting everyone to have done the reading for today. So, here is what is due on Wednesday:

  • Read Norton chapters 17 and 39.

  • Read Harris chapters  2A, 2B, 2C, 22A.2, 50E

  • Teacher draft of Literacy Narrative

  • Project Ideas paper

    • The project ideas assignment is to write out the topics you are considering for the research paper and why you are considering them. You’ll want to see how specific you can get, but I mainly just want to see what you are looking at doing (make sure to read the other post here about banned topics). It should be typed and use the format specified in the syllabus (your name, my name, section, date at the top left of the page, etc.).

    You should also start thinking about a person you can interview (see the assignment for section 002)  relating to either your research project or to your major. I recommend interviewing someone for your research topic.

    This is the big kahuna, folks. The portfolio is worth a total of 500 points (half your grade).

    Your portfolio should be in a big manilla envelope. You will include the following:

  • The grading sheet for the portfolio.

  • Page telling what you changed (or didn’t change) in your paper from the first version, and why.

  • A letter that discussed each paper.

  • Your final draft of the literacy narrative (stapled).

  • Your final draft of the rhetorical summary (stapled).

  • Your final draft of the researched argument (stapled).

  • Paper clipped together – Your teacher draft of the literacy narrative, the peer review sheet, and the peer review paper.

  • Paper clipped together – Your teacher draft of the rhetorical summary, the peer review sheet, and the peer review paper.

  • Paper clipped together – Your teacher draft of the literacy narrative, the peer review sheet, and the peer review paper.

    • All this goes into the manilla envelope. The envelope has your name and section number on it, along with the title of each paper.
