Special for you today!

I have put a couple examples (good, bad, and ugly) on Blackboard.

Just remember to focus on analyzing the rhetoric or how the author says something. Don’t focus on what the author says (expect to do a summary). Make sure to give specific examples to back up what you say.

Some of the examples are from a similar, but different, assignment, so use these only as guidelines.

Class for April 20th

Section 605 does NOT have class.

We start the final oral presentations this Tuesday for section 602.

Make sure you are at every remaining class period so that you can review all the presentations (you lose 5 pts for each one you fail to review).

Class for April 6th (Video Presentation Links)

For class, we’ll be talking about portfolios and public speaking and oral presentations.

Make sure to bring your completed Grammar Quiz with you to class.

You also need to do the reading and respond to this post with your links for video presentations.
The video can be about presentations, someone giving a presentation, or generally about rhetoric or something we learned in class this semester. Or, even something related to your research topic.

For class, we are getting caught up on the Graphics lesson, so that means you need to read:

AB 252-260
DK 226-231

You should also print out and have ready for review your attempt at the opening of your classical argument paper (just the first page to two pages).

You also need to bring (electronic or printout) all of the sources you have so far. If those sources have some form of graphic, you don’t have to bring anything else. If they don’t, you need to bring a couple examples of graphics.

We have reading in AB and DK due for class. This gets us caught up on the reading (except for the Graphics and Data lesson).

You also need to have your peer reviews done before class.

Based on what I’m seeing in the Analysis and Synthesis papers, I am also asking everyone to read through the 2 sources that the A student used for their Analysis and Synthesis paper (see Blackboard for the sources). We’ll go over these in detail in class and build an analysis and synthesis paper together so that you all will know how to revise your papers (yes, they are all pretty much needing to be revised).

This Tuesday we are talking about Annotated Bibliographies in more detail.

I will probably also finish up our discussion of Logos.

You need to email me your Review of Literature before class starts on Tuesday for homework.

You should also have your Peer Draft ready to go out, as we will be getting into peer review groups for this.
(Oops, that won’t be until Thursday.)

I apologize for the late notice on this – my internet went down over the weekend. Of course, this is all in the syllabus, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise.

On Tuesday, we are going to be talking about Reviews of Literature and Categorizing. These are both important for the Proposal part of the next assignment.

For reading, I suggest you look at the student examples on Blackboard.

Please bring 2 items of junk mail with you to class. This junk mail can either be something mailed to you via the post office, or it can be email spam.

You also need to bring your Peer Review Sheets to turn in.

Finally, your teacher draft of the Analysis and Synthesis paper is due by midnight Tuesday. Make sure you send the following:

PDFs (or Word documents) that contain the text of your sources for this paper.

The Analysis and Synthesis_Teacher Review Sheet (make sure to rename it as discussed in class)

Your teacher draft of the paper (the peer draft should also be included in the same file, at the end of the file)

A cover letter that tells how and what you want me to comment on; as well as whose papers you peer reviewed, who you sent your peer reviews to, and responding to your peer reviewers’ comments and suggestions (note that this is slightly different than last time)

Sorry about the delay in getting this up – it was a very busy weekend for Cub Scout stuff.

Your assignment for Tuesday was to read over the Teacher Drafts of the example Analysis and Synthesis papers (they are on Blackboard)

You are supposed to email me and attach a document with a paragraph or two of strong (rhetorical) response to one of your sources. You can look at the student examples on blackboard for what they did on this assignment, too.

Class on Feb 2

Make sure to remember that we are starting our class in the library (LI 207) on Tuesday, so go there first. Make sure you bring the ENGL 2010/2020 Worksheet (it is called the Research Study Guide in the syllabus) with you. It must be filled out completely! You can get it by going to http://www.uvu.edu/library/tutorials/index.html.

You also need to do the reading in AB so that you understand the things we’ll be talking about.

Finally, your Informative and Surprising Teacher Draft is due Tuesday (by 11:59pm).

Bring your peer review sheets to class to turn in. Everything else you email. See the Writing for 2020 and File Naming Conventionsdocument for information about how to name stuff.

Basically, you need to send me an email and attach the following to the email:

Teacher draft and peer draft in one document (the peer draft should be after the teacher draft). Make sure you name it: “ _Informative and Surprising_Teacher Draft.”. Make sure to change the and for your name and for the ending your word processor uses – see the handout (linked above) for details.

Cover letter (letter format) that says how you’d like me to comment on the paper and grammar and where you respond to the peer reviews. NOTE: If you fail to change something a peer tells you to do and don’t say why (and you should have), I will subtract more points than if you had a reason for not doing it. Make sure you name the letter: “ _Informative and Surprising_Cover Letter.” (changing the and for your name).

Download the Informative and Surprising_Teacher Review Sheet. Rename it to: “ _Informative and Surprising_Teacher Review Sheet.doc” (again, changing the and for your name).

Your source text (if it is not a PDF, either send the link to the web page or copy and paste into a document). Use the following naming convention: “ _Source_.” (again, change out the stuff in angle brackets for the appropriate information).

Just a quick post about the reading and assignments for Thursday.

Review chapters 3 and 4 in AB as preparation for the group presentations on Thursday.

Make sure to fill out your Group Evaluation form so you can turn it in on Thursday.F

For those groups presenting – make sure everything is ready to go.

Read the Surprising Introduction examples on Blackboard.

Email me your Surprising Introduction (make sure you follow formatting guidelines, use the file naming structure we talked about (Your Name_Surprising Introduction.doc), and attach it to the email to me.
