This post is for commenting on grammar and for posting your examples of poor grammar.

Make sure to tell WHY it is poor grammar.

Reading for Sept. 15 (Grammar)

The reading for Tuesday is all about grammar. I don’t expect you to read ALL of it, just the parts that you feel you need to work on or learn more about.

However, you should read the first several pages in AB and DK very carefully in case there is a quiz (hint!).

Also, comment here with one or two examples of poor grammar. Be sure to give an explanation about what is wrong with it (so we know you know, and to teach those who may not yet know).

This is an assignment. To get credit, you must post before class starts. You must give at least one example of poor grammar and then explain why it is not good.

The examples can be from anywhere or anyone (you may want to hide or obscure identifying information to protect the grammatically ignorant), including yourself.

I think one of the most common grammar mistakes is saying aint instead of are not or aren’t. Another thing is that adverb clauses are not independent clauses, so they cannot stand alone as sentences. Some examples of this are:

After it rains-It rains.

Although she was biking-She was biking.

While the cell’s shape changed-The cell’s shape kept changing

Bad Grammar Examples

We’ve been talking a lot about grammar over the past several classes. We’ve mostly focused on how to do it correctly, and why. But the bad examples are feeling left out, so it is up to you to share some with us.

So, post a comment here and share an example of poor grammar (keep the author of it anonymous). At the same time, share what is wrong with the example (such as missing comma or misplaced modifier).

I’ll start of with an example from a previous student paper:

“I ran through the hoardes of people looking for my mom.”

This misspells hordes, and has a misplaced modifier. As it stands, this person is running through a crowd who happen to be looking for the author’s mom.
