Make sure to remember that we are starting our class in the library (LI 207) on Tuesday, so go there first. Make sure you bring the ENGL 2010/2020 Worksheet (it is called the Research Study Guide in the syllabus) with you. It must be filled out completely! You can get it by going to http://www.uvu.edu/library/tutorials/index.html.

You also need to do the reading in AB so that you understand the things we’ll be talking about.

Finally, your Informative and Surprising Teacher Draft is due Tuesday (by 11:59pm).

Bring your peer review sheets to class to turn in. Everything else you email. See the Writing for 2020 and File Naming Conventionsdocument for information about how to name stuff.

Basically, you need to send me an email and attach the following to the email:

Teacher draft and peer draft in one document (the peer draft should be after the teacher draft). Make sure you name it: “ _Informative and Surprising_Teacher Draft.”. Make sure to change the and for your name and for the ending your word processor uses – see the handout (linked above) for details.

Cover letter (letter format) that says how you’d like me to comment on the paper and grammar and where you respond to the peer reviews. NOTE: If you fail to change something a peer tells you to do and don’t say why (and you should have), I will subtract more points than if you had a reason for not doing it. Make sure you name the letter: “ _Informative and Surprising_Cover Letter.” (changing the and for your name).

Download the Informative and Surprising_Teacher Review Sheet. Rename it to: “ _Informative and Surprising_Teacher Review Sheet.doc” (again, changing the and for your name).

Your source text (if it is not a PDF, either send the link to the web page or copy and paste into a document). Use the following naming convention: “ _Source_.” (again, change out the stuff in angle brackets for the appropriate information).

I forgot to post this last night, but here is where you can comment on the reading for Thursday.

The reading covers information about doing peer reviews and a review (hopefully) of the strong response paper you did in 1010.

For class, make sure to bring your filled out peer review sheets and a printout of your source (or a hard copy version). We will use the text of the source in class.

Just a quick post about the reading and assignments for Thursday.

Review chapters 3 and 4 in AB as preparation for the group presentations on Thursday.

Make sure to fill out your Group Evaluation form so you can turn it in on Thursday.F

For those groups presenting – make sure everything is ready to go.

Read the Surprising Introduction examples on Blackboard.

Email me your Surprising Introduction (make sure you follow formatting guidelines, use the file naming structure we talked about (Your Name_Surprising Introduction.doc), and attach it to the email to me.

Hello classes.

Since I had to hurry at the very end of class, this is to clarify what you need to have done for class on Thursday.

For the reading:

AB 181-183, 217-227

DK 28-33, 84-86

Read the 3 sources from the example students (go to Blackboard > Informative and Surprising Paper and then look for the documents that say something about being a source).

Assignments:

Writing Process – write up the process that YOU actually use when you have to do a research paper. Include the research and writing parts of your process. Write it in a document and attach it to an email to me. Check the Formatting Handout (see the previous post or the 2020 Info page) for how it should look.

Blog reading comments – register on this blog, wait for me to approve it (within 12hours, if not sooner), make a comment for THIS topic where you talk about the reading. That can be questions you have or insights or a summary or something like these.

Interview Memo – See the handout (also available on the 2020 Info page). Make sure to use the memo formatting we went over in class. Print this out and bring it to class with you.

Problem Posing – Using the list of research topics that was homework for Tuesday, write up some questions about them. For example, if your topic is Gay Adoption, some potential questions are: Should gays be allowed to adopt? Why do gays want to adopt? How would gay adoption affect the adopted children? Are gay couples as good at being parents as hetero couples? You get the idea. Before you do this assignment, check out the Topic Guidelines document to make sure you aren’t treading in shark-infested waters. Print this out and bring it to class with you, along with the topic list. We will definitely use both in class this time.

For the assignments you are emailing to me, make sure you follow the Paper Formatting for English 2020 document and the Writing for 2020 and File Naming Conventions guidelines.

The reading for Thursday is all about making evaluative claims. This is very important for your classical argument paper and a valuable skill to develop.

The reading for this Thursday is all about incorporating sources into your research papers.

In class, we’ll cover Summary, Paraphrase, and Quote; APA style; and Using Sources in your paper.

On Thursday, I’ll bring in the schedule for the rest of the semester for reading and due dates.
